HERE COMES THE BRIDE (PART 3 OF 4)

2004-09-22

[Nothing frees up your morning like locking your keys in your car.]

You gotta hand it to Katie, she made it down the aisle without crumbling into a pile of happy tears and snot. She seemed a bit misty-eyed on the way down, which was to be expected, and the priest said "Ah, tears of joy" when they both reached the altar. I found out later that he was actually referring to Scott.

AWWWWW.

The only thing that troubled me about the wedding was... where was everyone? Where were the Toohills? The Boettchers? Carolyn? Notre Dame faculty? The Gimbert and Toohill weddings had all been unofficial high school reunions, but the this one was a low key by comparisson. I wasn't complaining, though. I caught up with Bean, partook in the open bar with the Snake, and the cherry on top? Kelly June was my date. Kelly June! I've had the hots for her for quite some time, so apparently good things come to those who wait. We looked swell together, took a long walk on the pier, did a little dancing and just talked about the world. Definitely hope to be seeing her again.

But the funniest thing occured to me as I was sitting there listening to the homily. I remembered New Year's Eve, 1998. I was all geared up to make my move on a certain girl. Primed. Raring to go. I was a race car at a red, baby. It was the perfect opportunity. But, in grand Andy Hobin fashion, my plans blew up in my face. I was one-uped. Bamboozled. Sucker-punched. Who was that lady that I was hellbent on hitting on? The bride. And who cockblocked me? The groom.

So if any of you reading this turned around and wondered why I was chuckling during the sermon, that's why. It's funny how things turn out, isn't it?

It's also funny how I can go from a wedding during one part of my day to a birthday party where the social centerpiece is drinking beer out of a humongous glass boot. That, however, is another story for another day.
